How to Install the Kitty Korner® cat Door on a Hollow Core Door:

 A Step-by-Step Guide - see the video - https://youtu.be/GSgtifrQrwI

We hear it all the time: "I love the idea of the Kitty Korner® cat door, but I have hollow core doors. Will it work?" The short answer is yes, absolutely! In fact, most of our customers successfully install their Kitty Korner® cat doors on hollow core doors with zero issues. However, we also know that not all hollow core doors are created equal. Sometimes, especially if a door has been trimmed at the bottom to accommodate thick carpet or new flooring, the solid wood frame at the bottom edge might be too thin or missing entirely. When that happens, finding a secure mounting point for our patented SlideLock™ hinge can feel a bit tricky.

But don't worry — we've got you covered. If you find yourself working with a tricky hollow
core door, here is a simple, straightforward way to reinforce the door and ensure your Kitty Korner® hinge mounts rock-solid.

What You'll Need
In addition to your Kitty Korner® kit and standard installation tools (saw, drill, screwdriver),
you will just need a small piece of scrap wood (like a 1x1 or a 2x4 cut to the width of the interior of your door) and some wood glue.

The Reinforcement Method

Step 1: Make Your Cut. Follow the standard Kitty Korner® installation instructions to cut the triangular corner off your door.
Step 2: Inspect the Inside. Once the corner is removed, look inside the hollow cavity of the door. If you see plenty of solid wood framing along the cut edge, you are good to go — proceed with standard installation. If the cavity is mostly empty space and thin veneer,
proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Prepare Your Filler Wood. Take your scrap piece of wood and cut it to fit snugly
inside the hollow cavity along the angled cut you just made. You want this piece of wood to sit flush with the cut edge, creating a solid surface for the hinge screws to bite into.
Step 4: Glue and Secure. Apply a generous amount of wood glue to your filler wood and
slide it into the hollow cavity. You can use a couple of small finishing nails or brads through the face of the door to hold the wood in place while the glue dries, or simply clamp it.
Step 5: Install the Hinge. Once the glue is completely dry, you now have a solid, reinforced edge! Place your SlideLock™ hinge on the freshly sawed (and now reinforced) angle, mark your holes, pre-drill, and secure the hinge with the provided screws.
If you are more of a visual learner, we have a short, helpful video demonstrating this exact
process on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/GSgtifrQrwI Hollow Core Door Reinforcement Video.

Don't let a hollow core door keep your cat from their newfound freedom. With just a tiny bit of extra prep, your Kitty Korner door will be installed and functioning perfectly for years to come!
